Capitals vs Sabres: Redemption or Ruin?

Washington Capitals · 2026-10-23 · Beatline Sports Podcast Network

Allison: Ryan Leonard just scored two goals against the Kings, but Washington’s defense is bleeding out. Can they fix it before Buffalo arrives?

Allison: Welcome to the Beatline Podcast Network, America's number one daily sports podcast network. I’m Allison, and you’re tuned in to the daily Washington Capitals show. Derek, what a night that was on Tuesday.

Derek: It was a rough one, Alli. A 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Adrian Kempe had two goals, Artemi Panarin added points, and frankly, our special teams were non-existent.

Allison: Right. And now we have less than twenty-four hours until the Buffalo Sabres walk into the Capital One Arena for game day tomorrow. We’ve got three things coming up: first, why this matchup matters for our playoff hopes; second, how the injury bug is changing our lineup; and third, my bold prediction for tomorrow night.

Derek: We’ll also look at whether Ryan Leonard can carry the offense if the rest of the team keeps playing like this.

Allison: Let’s dive right in. Segment one: The Matchup.

Allison: So, Derek, we talked about this last week. The Kings came in at 0-4-2, looking desperate. They won 5-2. Now Buffalo comes in at 4-4-2. They’re fighting for position in the Atlantic Division.

Derek: Exactly. And here’s the thing: Buffalo isn’t the Kings. They’re more structured defensively. If Washington tries to turn this into a track meet again, we’re going to lose by six. We need to slow it down.

Allison: But wait—aren’t we 5-4 overall? We’re sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference. That’s not great. We’re basically on the bubble right now.

Derek: Eleventh place is dangerous territory. You’re outside the top eight, which means every single point counts double. Against a team like Buffalo, who is also hovering around .500, this is a six-point swing game.

Allison: Six points! That’s huge. Last time we played well, remember? We beat New Jersey 4-2. Then we looked good against LA initially, but then... boom. The collapse happened.

Derek: The collapse wasn’t just one moment. It was neutral-zone play. Buffalo excels at cycling the puck in the offensive zone. If we don’t get our forecheck tight, they’re going to dump and chase us all night.

Allison: I remember saying yesterday that if the defense improves, we win 3-2. Do you still believe that? Or has the Kings game killed your confidence in that forecast?

Derek: I’m skeptical, Alli. But I’m an optimist by nature. The key is zone entries. If we can get the puck in cleanly instead of clearing it back out, we control the tempo. Buffalo wants chaos. We need order.

Allison: Order. Okay. Let’s talk about who’s actually going to provide that order. Because the roster looks different tonight.

Derek: Stick with us. After the break, we’re breaking down the injuries and the line combinations.

Allison: Welcome back. Derek, let’s talk injuries. This is the big story. Pierre-Luc Dubois is on Injured Reserve. Rasmus Sandin is also on IR. Justin Sourdif is day-to-day.

Derek: Dubois is a massive loss. He’s a physical presence on the wing. Without him, the top-six forward group loses a lot of grit. And Sandin? He’s a mobile defenseman. His absence hurts our ability to move the puck out of our own zone.

Allison: And Logan Thompson is day-to-day. So Charlie Lindgren is likely starting tomorrow?

Derek: Lindgren has to step up. He’s been solid when given opportunities. But goaltending alone won’t save us if the defensive structure is broken. We saw that against LA. Kempe scored because he found space. Lindgren couldn’t cover everything.

Allison: Okay, so who are we playing? Who’s getting the nod up front? Ryan Leonard had two goals against LA. Jonny Brodzinski had an assist. Are they locked in?

Derek: Leonard is on Line 1. He’s showing real promise as a rookie. But he needs help. Dylan Strome is centering the second line. Alex Tuch is on the wing. Remember, we predicted Strome and Tuch would combine for three points. Did they?

Allison: They didn’t. Not really. Tuch had zero points against LA. And Strome was quiet too. This is exactly what we worried about. Secondary scoring has vanished.

Derek: That’s the problem. It’s all on Leonard right now. If Buffalo shuts him down, we’re in trouble. Boone Jenner and Ethen Frank might see more ice time. Aliaksei Protas could be a factor in the middle.

Allison: And defensively? Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy are the anchors. Vincent Desharnais and Martin Fehervary are filling in. Timothy Liljegren and Cole Hutson are there too. It’s a crowded blue line, but without Sandin, it feels thin.

Derek: It does feel thin. And that’s scary. Because Buffalo has speed. They have players who can exploit gaps. If our defensemen aren’t disciplined, we’re giving up high-danger chances.

Allison: High-danger chances. That’s the buzzword of the season so far. Okay, Derek, we’re heading into the final segment. What are the keys to the game? How do we win tomorrow?

Derek: Penalty kill. First and foremost. Our penalty kill was atrocious against LA. We gave up power-play goals too easily. If we can keep that unit strong, we stay in the game.

Allison: Agreed. Second key?

Derek: Faceoffs. Winning draws in the offensive zone. It creates pressure. It keeps the puck away from Buffalo’s skilled forwards. If we win 55 percent of the draws, we control the flow.

Allison: Okay. So, penalty kill and faceoffs. And hope Ryan Leonard stays hot. What’s your prediction, Derek? Yesterday you said we’d win 2-1. Gritty, low-scoring. Still sticking with that?

Derek: I am. I think we grind them out. 2-1. Maybe 3-1 if Leonard gets a hat trick. But I’m keeping it conservative.

Allison: Conservative. Bold enough for me. Alright, before we go to the final call, I want to ask for your help. These daily breakdowns are part of your morning routine, right? Your commute?
