Boldy's Five-Point Night: Can Wild Survive the Blue Jackets?

Minnesota Wild · 2026-10-16 · Beatline Sports Podcast Network

Monica: Matt Boldy just dropped a five-point night to beat the Blues, but the real story is who is actually on the ice for Columbus tonight. Welcome to the Beatline Podcast Network, America’s number one daily sports podcast. I’m Monica, and this is your Minnesota Wild preview.

Frank: And I’m Frank. We’ve got a rugged matchup ahead against the Blue Jackets, and with our defensive corps taking hits, this isn’t going to be pretty. It’s going to be gritty.

Monica: Here is what we are covering today. First, we break down that thrilling 5-4 win over St. Louis and what it means for our standing in the West. Second, we look at the injury report—because let’s be honest, it’s getting long—and how the lines shuffle. And third, we give you the keys to beating Columbus tonight.

Frank: Exactly. We’re sitting at 5-2, third in the Western Conference. That is excellent early-season form, but the margin for error is vanishingly small with the depth issues we’re facing.

Monica: Let’s dive right into Segment One: The Matchup and the Storylines. Frank, you mentioned the grit. After last night’s 5-4 thriller, does this team feel like they can withstand a physical battle with Columbus?

Frank: I think they have to. You look at the roster, Jared Spurgeon is out. Marcus Foligno is on IR. Nico Sturm is on IR. Torey Krug is on IR. Dillon Dube is on IR. Alexey Toropchenko is on IR. Tyler Tucker is on IR. Olli Maatta is day-to-day. That is a massive amount of missing talent.

Monica: That is a scary list to read aloud. But despite all that, Matt Boldy went off. He had five points in that win. How do you balance celebrating that offensive explosion with the reality of the defensive holes?

Frank: You celebrate it because if you don’t score five goals, you probably lose. Look at the previous games. We lost 5-2 to Winnipeg. We struggled against Tampa Bay. The offense has to carry the weight right now. Boldy’s hat trick was his fifth career one. That is elite production.

Monica: And Kirill Kaprizov added his league-high ninth goal and two assists. So the top line is firing. But when you play Columbus, you know they are going to clog the neutral zone. How do we get through there without Spurgeon and Krug anchoring the blue line?

Frank: You use Brock Faber. He is young, he is fast, and he is comfortable carrying the puck out of the zone. You also need Jonas Brodin to stay calm. When the defensive pairings are shuffled due to injuries, experience matters. If the Wild want to maintain that third-place standing, they can’t rely solely on Boldy and Kaprizov. They need secondary scoring.

Monica: Secondary scoring is key. Joel Eriksson Ek needs to contribute more than just faceoffs. We talked about this before, remember? Back in the Florida series preview, we were worried about defensive depth. Well, the depth chart is basically rewritten.

Frank: It is. And that brings us to the next phase. But before we jump into the injury specifics and line combinations, I want to take a quick breath here. If these daily breakdowns are part of your morning routine or commute, a small tip is what keeps them coming. Please check the link in the episode description to support us.

Monica: Thank you. Let’s move to Segment Two: Key Players, Lines, and Injuries. Frank, with Spurgeon, Krug, and Maatta dealing with issues, who is starting on defense tonight?

Frank: It’s likely Zach Bogosian paired with either David Spacek or Carson Lambos. Bogosian brings size, but he’s not a mobility defenseman like Spurgeon. Against a team like Columbus, which likes to cycle and crash the net, that size might actually help. But the gap in skill level is real.

Monica: And Viking Gustafsson Nyberg? Is he playing? He’s been getting looks lately.

Frank: He’s on the roster. With the injuries, he’s definitely in the mix. Daemon Hunt is another option. The coaching staff has to make a choice between youth and veteran presence. Quinn Hughes is listed as a defenseman here, which is interesting given his offensive pedigree. He’ll likely see power-play time.

Monica: Right, Quinn Hughes is on the blueline for us? Okay. Now, let’s talk forwards. With Foligno and Sturm out, who is handling the bottom-six grind? Nick Foligno is still there, obviously.

Frank: Nick Foligno will step up. Ryan Hartman provides energy. Blake Coleman is always reliable in the defensive zone. And Michael McCarron? He’s a big body. You need guys who can win board battles. That’s why the loss of Marcus Foligno hurts so much. He’s a specific type of player.

Monica: So the top line is Boldy-Kaprizov-Eriksson Ek? Or is Boldy moving up?

Frank: Based on last night, Boldy is centering that line or playing wing with Kaprizov. Kaprizov had nine goals already. He is the engine. But watch Bobby Brink. He’s a rookie, RW position, and if he gets ice time, he’s dangerous in transition. Maxim Shabanov and Danila Yurov are also options for the wings.

Monica: Bobby Brink! Yes! The kid has speed. If he can exploit the gaps left by Columbus’s tired legs, that’s a matchup advantage. And goaltending? Calvin Pickard and Jesper Wallstedt. Who starts?

Frank: Wallstedt has been solid. Pickard is the veteran backup. Given the schedule, Wallstedt should start. But if he gets pulled, Pickard needs to hold the fort. We saw against Winnipeg that Cole Perfetti scored twice. If Wallstedt gives up soft goals, it’s game over.

Monica: Okay, Segment Three: Keys to the Game and a Bold Prediction. Frank, we’ve talked injuries, we’ve talked stars. What is the single biggest key for the Wild to win tonight?

Frank: Neutral-zone pressure. Columbus wants to dump and chase. The Wild need to forecheck aggressively. Use that energy from Hartman and Coleman. Force turnovers. Don’t let them set up their cycle. If the Wild kill their penalty kill effectively, they keep the game close.

Monica: Penalty kill is huge. With Spurgeon out, the PK unit changes significantly. Do you trust the current group?

Frank: I trust their effort. I worry about their positioning. But if Kaprizov and Boldy keep generating offense, the Wild don’t need to score seven goals. They just need three or four. And they need to protect leads.

Monica: Bold prediction time. Last week, Frank predicted a 4-2 win over Vegas with two points from Kaprizov. Did he hit? Well, we didn’t have that data then, but looking at Columbus... I’m saying Wild win 4-2. Kaprizov gets two points again.

Frank: I’ll go slightly higher. Wild win 5-3. Boldy has another point, maybe a goal. The defense struggles a bit, but the offense overwhelms them. That’s my call. 5-3 Wild.

Monica: There you have it. Boldy is on fire, the injuries are real, but the Wild are fighting their way to the top of the West. Thanks for listening to the Beatline Podcast Network.
