Stars Rebound? Columbus Preview & Injury Report

Dallas Stars · 2026-10-30 · Beatline Sports Podcast Network

Natalie: We just got hammered, 5-2 at home to Montreal. Cole Caufield was absolutely lights out with two goals and two assists. But we are not letting that one define the week. We have a chance to bounce back immediately against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Scott: That is right, Natalie. The puck didn't bounce our way in Montreal. We gave up too many high-danger chances in the neutral zone. Tonight, it’s about tightening up that defensive structure before we face another non-conference opponent.

Natalie: Welcome to the Beatline Podcast Network! I’m Natalie, and this is your daily Dallas Stars preview show. Scott is here with me as we look ahead to Friday night’s clash with Columbus. If you’re new here, welcome to the family.

Scott: Hey everyone. Glad to be here. It’s been a tough few days for the fanbase after that New Jersey loss and now the Montreal result, but hockey is a game of adjustments. We’ll talk about what needs to change.

Natalie: Here is what we are tackling today: First, we break down the Columbus Blue Jackets’ style and why this matchup matters for our standing. Second, we dive deep into the injury report—who is out, who is IR, and how that reshapes our lines. And third, we give you our keys to victory and a bold prediction for Friday.

Scott: Sounds like a solid plan. Let’s get into it. The last time we talked, we were hoping to extend a win streak. Now, we’re looking to stop the bleeding. It starts with focus.

Natalie: Exactly. And let’s be clear, a 7-5 record isn’t terrible, but being sixth in the Western Conference while giving up five goals at home? That’s unacceptable. Let’s talk about the enemy.

Natalie: So, Scott, Columbus comes in at 5-6. They’re in the Metropolitan Division, so they’re a bit of an outsider to our Central Division world, but they’re dangerous. What do you see from them?

Scott: Well, Natalie, Columbus is always tricky because they play with a lot of pace. They aren’t afraid to bring the puck through the neutral zone. Against a team with our current depth issues, that speed can cause problems if we don’t forecheck properly.

Natalie: Forechecking is key. We struggled with that in Montreal. Caufield found space everywhere. How do we shut that down against Columbus?

Scott: You have to commit to the trap. You can’t leave seams open. When we played New Jersey, Hellebuyck was stellar, but our own defense was porous. We need to make sure our blue line, especially Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley, stays disciplined. No lazy entries.

Natalie: Right. And Columbus has their own offensive threats. We need to respect their power play. Are we going to be able to generate offense ourselves, or are we just trying to survive?

Scott: We have to score. We can’t just park the bus. Wyatt Johnston had a goal and points in that Montreal game, which is huge. He’s on Line 1 and Line 2 depending on the shift. He’s our engine right now.

Natalie: Johnston is vital. But we also saw some good energy from the lower lines. Did you notice anything else in that Montreal game besides the loss?

Scott: I did. Even in defeat, there were moments where our forecheck looked sharp. It’s just consistency. If we can maintain that pressure for sixty minutes against Columbus, we win this game comfortably. They’re a vulnerable team on the road.

Natalie: Vulnerable or not, they’re coming to America’s Center. We can’t underestimate them. Stick with us, we’ve got more on the roster changes coming up.

Natalie: Okay, let’s talk injuries. This is the elephant in the room. We lost to New Jersey, then Montreal, and the injury list keeps growing. Who is out for Columbus?

Scott: It’s a long list, Natalie. Kyle Capobianco is Out. Esa Lindell is on Injured Reserve. Radek Faksa is Out. Oskar Back is IR. Matt Duchene is IR. And Scott Matheson is Out.

Natalie: Wow. That’s a lot of bodies missing. Lindell and Faksa are core veterans. How does that impact our identity?

Scott: It hurts our physicality. Lindell is our shutdown defenseman. Without him, someone like Nils Lundkvist or Luke Krys might see more minutes. And Faksa? He’s our face-off guy. Losing him means we’re relying on Tyler Seguin or Roope Hintz more for draws.

Natalie: Seguin and Hintz taking more face-offs... that changes the dynamic. Do you think Colin Blackwell or Jaxon Fuder gets a shot?

Scott: Blackwell is a veteran presence. He’s reliable. Fuder is young, though. I think Coach will lean on experience here. We need guys who can handle the pressure. Matt Duchene being on IR is tough too; he adds scoring depth.

Natalie: And on the other side, Nick Suzuki is Out for Montreal? Wait, that was last game. For Columbus, are there major injuries we know about?

Scott: The brief doesn’t list specific Columbus injuries, which is actually good news for us. It means we can prepare for their full lineup. But our own depth chart is thinned out. It’s a test for the coaching staff.

Natalie: Let’s look at the forwards. With Duchene and Faksa out, who is getting the top-six minutes? Johnston and Robertson are locked in, obviously.

Scott: Robertson is having a great season. He’s on Line 2 with Rantanen. Wait, Rantanen had assists in Montreal? Yes, Mikko Rantanen picked up two assists. He’s connecting well with Jason Robertson. That line is lethal.

Natalie: Rantanen and Robertson together is scary. And Johnston? He had the goal and points. Is he moving up?

Scott: He’s playing big minutes. Whether it’s Line 1 or Line 2, he’s getting ice time. We need him to drive the net-front presence. Our size is lacking without some of those bigger bodies, so Johnston has to be agile.

Natalie: Agility and speed. Okay, so we’re thinner, but we have talent. Let’s hope Jake Oettinger is ready to stand tall in net.

Scott: Oettinger has to be better. He faced 30+ shots in Montreal. He needs to clean up the rebounds. Casey DeSmith is there as insurance, but Oettinger is our starter. He knows he left some saves out there.

Natalie: No doubt. The boys are watching his performance closely. Let’s move to Segment 3. Keys to the game. What do we need to see Friday?

Natalie: Keys to the game, Scott. We need a win. What are the three things that must happen for Dallas to beat Columbus?

Scott: One: Win the neutral zone battle. Don’t let them carry the puck in. Two: Capitalize on the power play. We’ve been stagnant. Use the Robertson-Rantanen line to set screens. Three: Physical play. Hit the boards. Make it hard for them to turn over the puck.

Natalie: Hit the boards. I like that. We’ve been too passive. Columbus wants speed, we want grit. Can we impose our will?

Scott: We can. Jamie Benn is still here. He brings that edge. David Perron too. We need those veterans to lead by example. If we play smart, disciplined hockey, Columbus’s 5-6 record shows they’re not invincible.

Natalie: Smart and disciplined. Okay, bold prediction time. I’m going to say we win this one. I’m thinking 4-2. We score early, settle down, and get the W.

Scott: I’m going to go with 3-1. I think we control the tempo. Oettinger makes a few big saves, and Johnston scores the winner. A clean sheet would be nice, but 3-1 feels realistic given the injuries.

Natalie: 3-1 vs 4-2. Interesting split. I like the confidence, Scott. Let’s hope you’re right. This is our chance to get back to .500 or better.

Scott: It is. Seven wins is a good start, but consistency is the name of the game. Let’s go Stars.

Natalie: That’s it for today’s episode. We covered the Columbus matchup, the heavy injury list including Lindell and Duchene, and our keys to victory. Thanks for listening.

Scott: Thanks for tuning in. Let’s keep the faith. The team is adjusting, and we’ll see the results on the ice.
