Nicole: Alright Kevin, let’s dive into the pitching matchup for tonight’s opener in Toronto. Who do we have on the bump for the M’s?
Kevin: The big arm, Logan Gilbert. He’s been our most consistent starter all season, and he’s coming off a stretch where he’s been dealing.
Nicole: And he’s exactly who you want on the mound after a 6-0 shutout loss. Kevin, you predicted Gilbert would throw seven innings of one-run ball with nine K’s in the last series — we’re hoping for more of that.

Kevin: Absolutely. But we need more from the top of the lineup. Julio’s been pressing a bit, and Randy’s been streaky. They need to get on base for Cal.
Nicole: Randy Arozarena, Victor Robles, Taylor Ward — there’s talent there. What’s the one thing they need to do differently tonight?
Kevin: Plate discipline. We’ve been chasing too many pitches outside the zone. If we can work counts and get into their bullpen early, that’s how we win.
Nicole: And the bullpen — that’s been a concern all year. We’ve got some guys banged up, right?
Kevin: Big time. Matt Brash is on the 60-day IL, and that hurts our late-inning options. Andres Munoz is still our closer, and he’s been solid, but we need the bridge to him to hold up.

Kevin: Barely. We’re 3rd in the West, and the wild-card race is tight. Every series from here on out is a must-win.
Nicole: Alright, so what are the keys to this series? How do we come out of Toronto with a series win?
Nicole: We need to win at least two of three in Toronto. What’s the formula, Kevin?
Kevin: First, we need quality starts from our rotation. Gilbert tonight, and then we’ve got Kirby and Woo later in the series. If they give us six or seven innings, we’re in good shape.
Nicole: And the offense has to show up. We can’t rely on Cal to do it all by himself.
Kevin: Exactly. We need Julio to be Julio. He’s been cold, but he’s due. And if he gets going, this lineup looks completely different.
Nicole: What about the Blue Jays? They’re 65-70, fifth in the AL East. They’ve got some power in that lineup.
Kevin: They do. They can hurt you with the long ball, so we’ve got to keep the ball down and make them earn their runs.
Nicole: Alright, time for bold predictions. Kevin, you’ve been on a roll — what’ve you got for tonight?
Kevin: I’m going to say Logan Gilbert throws seven innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts, and the Mariners win it 4-1. Julio hits a solo shot to break the slump.
Nicole: I love it. I’m going to say Cal Raleigh homers again, and the M’s win 5-3 with Munoz locking down the save.
Kevin: Those are solid. If we get that kind of pitching and a couple of big swings, we’re in business.
