Carly: Welcome to the Beatline Podcast Network! I’m Carly, and this is your daily preview for the Kansas City Royals. Joining me as always is our lead analyst, Doug. Doug, how are you doing today?
Doug: I’m good, Carly. It’s a busy day here at the network. We’ve got a lot to unpack with this Red Sox series.

Doug: That’s right. We’re talking about whether Carter Jensen can keep his hot bat going, if Craig Kimbrel is ready for high-leverage work, and what happens when Maikel Garcia comes back from the IL.
Carly: We also have to talk about the elephant in the room: Willson Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela are both still on the 10-day IL, and Curtis Mead is there too. That’s a lot of holes in the roster. Let’s jump right into Segment One: The Series and the Pitching Probables.
Carly: Okay, Doug, let’s set the stage. We are in Boston. The Red Sox are sitting at 81-68, third in the AL East. The Royals are 66-83, fifth in the AL Central. The series is tied one-and-one. Tonight is Game Three. Who do you think starts for Kansas City?
Doug: Well, looking at the roster, we have Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Randy Dobnak, and Noah Cameron available. Given the stakes, I’d expect them to go with their most reliable arm. Lugo has been solid all year, but Wacha might get the nod if they want to mix things up.
Carly: Right, and remember yesterday we talked about how Seth Lugo performed really well in the first game. But then, Ranger Suarez went seven innings, struck out eight, and gave up only one run in the second game. He’s been dominant.
Doug: Exactly. Suarez was fantastic. He held the Royals to one run over seven innings. So whoever starts for KC tonight needs to have some answer for that kind of stuff. If it’s Wacha, he’s got experience, but he needs to keep his pitch count down.
Carly: And what about the bullpen? If the starter doesn’t go deep, who are they calling on? We know Tony Gonsolin and Connor Seabold are on the 60-day IL. James McArthur is also out long-term. That limits their options significantly.
Doug: It’s a tough spot. You’ve got Craig Kimbrel, obviously. He’s the closer. Then you have Alex Lange, Steven Cruz, Jose Cuas, Anthony Gose, Nolan Hoffman, Easton McGee, Nate Pearson, and Daniel Lynch IV. That’s a lot of arms, but not necessarily a lot of depth if someone gets hit by a line drive tomorrow.
Carly: So, Kimbrel is the anchor. But do you trust him right now? He’s been around forever, but he’s not the same force he was five years ago. Do you think he closes this game tonight?
Doug: I think he’s still effective in short bursts. But if the game is tight in the ninth, I’d feel better with Alex Lange or maybe even Jose Cuas getting the call if Kimbrel has thrown a lot earlier in the week. You don’t want to overuse him.
Carly: Fair point. And what about the Red Sox? They have Tanner Houck on the 60-day IL, which helps us, but they still have a strong rotation. If Suarez goes again, it’s going to be a grind for every batter on this team.
Doug: Grind is the right word. Suarez struck out eight last night. That’s elite stuff. For the Royals to win, they need to make contact and put the ball in play. No chasing breaking balls out of the zone.
Carly: Alright, so we’ve got the pitching picture. Now we need to talk about who is actually hitting the ball. Because let’s be honest, the injury list is scary. Maikel Garcia is out. Willson Contreras is out. Ceddanne Rafaela is out. Curtis Mead is out. Tyron Guerrero is on the 15-day IL.
Doug: It’s a mess, Carly. We lost three infielders and a catcher in one day. That changes the entire defensive alignment and the batting order.
Carly: So who is stepping up? We know Bobby Witt Jr. is there. He’s our superstar. And Vinnie Pasquantino at first base. What about Nick Loftin? He’s playing third base now since Garcia is out.
Doug: Loftin has been decent, but he’s not Witt. Witt is carrying this offense. He’s got speed, he’s got power. If he’s healthy, he’s the key. But without Garcia, the bottom of the order suffers.
Carly: And what about Salvador Perez? He’s been huge. Remember Friday? He added an RBI in that 3-2 victory. And Carter Jensen had a two-run double. Those are clutch plays.
Doug: Perez is always clutch. But Jensen is the guy to watch. He’s having a great series. Two-run doubles don’t lie. He’s figuring out the Red Sox pitching.
Carly: But Doug, remember our prediction from Monday? I said Perez would hit a home run and we’d sweep. You said we’d split. Well, we didn’t sweep the first two games. Suarez won the second one. So can we really sweep tonight?
Doug: It’s getting harder to see the sweep. The injuries are mounting. But if Jensen keeps hitting like this, and Witt stays hot, maybe we pull it off. But I’m leaning toward a Red Sox win tonight.

Doug: He’s Day-To-Day, which usually means he’s probable but not confirmed. He’s an outfielder. If he’s out, who’s playing center field? Kyle Isbel? Or maybe Matthew Lugo shifts around?
Carly: Isbel has been solid defensively. But offensively? He’s not a power hitter. We need power against Suarez. That’s where Caglianone fits in. He’s got pop. If he’s out, we lose a lot of threat in the middle of the order.
Doug: Agreed. And what about Isaac Collins in left field? He’s young. John Rave in right? These guys are capable, but they aren’t proven against elite pitching like Suarez yet.
Carly: Let’s talk about Tyler Tolbert at shortstop. With Maikel Garcia out, Tolbert is starting. How does that change things? Garcia is a speed demon. Tolbert isn’t.
Doug: It changes the defense. Garcia can save runs with his range. Tolbert is more of a average defender. But offensively, Garcia’s absence is bigger. He gets on base. He creates chaos. Without him, the Royals lose a layer of complexity.
Carly: So we’re relying heavily on Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino. And maybe Josh Rojas at third? He’s versatile. Can he handle the load?
Doug: Rojas is a good player. He’s smart. But he’s not Witt. Witt is the engine. If Witt is cold, this team struggles. If Witt is hot, anyone can beat anyone.
Carly: And what about Luke Maile behind the plate? He’s catching. Willson Contreras is on the IL. Maile is experienced, but he’s not known for his offensive production.
Doug: Maile is a defensive catcher. He handles pitchers well. That’s crucial against Suarez. You need a guy who can frame pitches and keep the pitcher calm. Maile does that. Offensively, he’s not going to carry the team, but he won’t hurt you.
Carly: Okay, so the puzzle pieces are scattered. Witt, Pasquantino, Jensen, Perez. The rest are fill-ins. Does that worry you?
Doug: It worries me a little. But baseball is a game of inches. If Jensen hits another double, and Perez drives him in, we win. It’s that simple.
Carly: Or if Suarez shuts us down again. He’s been perfect. Seven innings, one run, eight strikeouts. That’s dominance.
Doug: It is. But even the best pitchers have bad days. Maybe tonight is one of those days for Suarez. Maybe Witt draws a walk, moves over, and Jensen scores him. Small things matter.
Carly: Small things. Right. Okay, let’s move to Segment Three. Keys to the series and a bold prediction. What are the keys for the Royals tonight?
Doug: Key number one: Plate discipline. Don’t chase Suarez’s slider. Key number two: Speed. Even without Garcia, Witt and Loftin need to steal bases. Put pressure on the defense.
Carly: And key number three: Clutch hitting. Jensen and Perez need to deliver again. They did it Friday. Can they do it Sunday?
Doug: Absolutely. And key number four: Bullpen management. Don’t burn Kimbrel early. Save him for the ninth. Use Lange or Cuas in the seventh and eighth.
Carly: Okay, Doug, bold prediction time. I’m sticking with my original thought. I think Salvador Perez hits a home run tonight. I think he leads the Royals to a 4-3 victory. I think we complete the sweep.
Doug: I’m going to disagree with you, Carly. I think the injuries are too much. I think Suarez pitches seven innings again. I think Wilyer Abreu hits another key hit. I think the Red Sox win 3-1. I think the Royals fall short.
Carly: Oh, I hate that prediction! But I respect it. So we’re split. I say Royals win, you say Red Sox win. Who do you think is right?
Doug: I think I’m right. But if Jensen hits another two-run double, I’ll eat my words.
